Belmont Composer Wins a Third Telly Award
Score’s global rhythms bring awareness to the need for
reef preservation
SAN FRANCISCO, November 30, 2011--Although
Bay Area composer John DeBorde is well-known for bringing
a signature sensitivity to all of his compositions, his score
for “The Coral Reef Alliance: What We Do,” struck
an emotional chord with the judges of the Telly Awards, a
panel of advertising and production professionals who annually
recognize the best in film and video productions, as well
as local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs.
DeBorde’s work was honored by the panel for the third
time, this year with a Bronze Video award for his work with
The Coral Alliance.
“For this particular score, I wanted to create a sense
of world unity, so I combined instruments from a variety of
cultures to symbolize people from around the world coming
together to solve the problems that coral reefs face,”
said DeBorde, who is an avid SCUBA diver, as well as a musician
and composer. “These instruments were also blended with
some watery synthetic elements for the many underwater scenes
in the film, which also lend to the cinematic quality of the
music.”
The composer has scored films in a variety of genres, including
comedy, drama, animation, horror, children's, and documentary.
He has composed more than 600 promos for ABC, NBC, and the
Warner Brothers Television Network. His music also appears
in video games and corporate-communications media for a client
roster that includes Microsoft, Sony, and Electronic Arts.
DeBorde’s score for the documentary Voices of the Sierra
Tarahumara was featured at the Sundance Film Festival, as
well at a variety of other notable film festivals worldwide.
He has received numerous awards and honors, including an Aurora
Award for his score to Reconocer, a web-based serial film,
and two other Telly Awards—one in 2002 and another in
2005.
